We have a new HD TV (love) and it is making us re-think our wall unit. Previously we had a separate wall unit and TV stand but since the new HD units are so thin we don't need to necessarily separate them. Sooo ... now we are considering a variety of contemporary units that will fill up one of our walls. Boy, this is a big change to the living room.

Often times the living room wall unit is purchased, set against the wall and filled with TVs, audio/video equipment, CDs, books, pictures and other décor. This is all fine and good, but we’d like to suggest you consider something a bit more custom. For example, you can have a carpenter build a custom wall unit to suit the shape of your room (think slanted ceilings with slanted wall unit top matching the angle), or using complementary materials to your room. The custom work may or may not be more expensive than purchasing a prebuilt unit, depending on the complexity and materials. With custom you can also install lighting to accent décor pieces or give light to dark shelves. If you have areas with closing doors, you might consider adding sliding shelves to make accessing things like electronics easier to access. Lastly, be sure to secure your wall unit to the wall in case of an earthquake. Wall units tend to be large and heavy and if they aren’t secured properly, they are very dangerous in an earthquake.
